No Hollywood couple shines brighter than George and Amal Clooney. While some see the human rights lawyer as the one that managed to lasso the notorious playboy, others see Clooney as the arm candy. After all, when you’re a lawyer that’s planning to take ISIS to court and testified before the United Nations, having an A-lister beside you seems insignificant. Nonetheless, the Clooneys are Tinseltown’s golden couple — and they’re celebrating their very first anniversary together this week. To celebrate, let’s remember how it all began, with a date that involved an iconic recording studio and the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to BuzzFeed, Clooney’s had a pretty sweet plan in store for Amal when he was planning their first get-together. Instead of the usual wining and dining, he invited her to a recording session at Abbey Road, the same place the Beatles recorded some of its biggest hits. Just one problem: When you’re trying to date someone as high-profile as Amal (then Amal Alamuddin), you’ve got to get in line. Even though Clooney had called her, she said she’d be a little late, since she was taking legal action against the Muslim Brotherhood that day and didn’t know exactly when that’d wrap up. Same, Amal, same. We’re always putting off dates because of global politics.

Well, they managed to hit the recording session, which involved a 150-piece orchestra. Then, they headed to dinner, even though Amal wasn’t quite sure how it’d be dating someone as famous as George Clooney. She handled it like a champ, however. Clooney told The Hollywood Reporter that the paparazzi that gathered outside the restaurant was hardly a distraction at all.

“She said, ‘Let’s go to this place,'” George told THR. “It was one of those places that was incredibly hip and chic. And when we came out, there were 50 paparazzi there. But she handled it like a champ.”

But what’s even cuter than that little human-rights related delay? The fact that George would write Amal letters pretending to be his dog, Einstein. As a prelude to actually dating he’d pen letters to her saying things like, “I’m being held hostage, and I need a lawyer,” and signing off as his pup. With a cute habit like that, it’s no wonder Amal fell for Clooney. Clever boy, George.
