While the world of film may be all smoke and mirrors, there’s no getting away from the fact that if you’re going to portray a superhero on screen, you’ve got to be in pretty good shape in real life to pull it off.

For kick-ass actress Scarlett Johansson, who plays soul-searching super ‘Black Widow’, this involved a punishing training regime similar to that undertaken by Olympic athletes, in order to prepare her for blockbuster movie Avengers: Endgame which premiered this week.

The intense training for the action-packed, stunt-heavy movie involved “integrated foundational strength training” according to the star’s PT.

“We treated the process like an athlete preparing for competition,” Eric Johnson, Scarlett’s personal trainer, explained to Harpers Bazaar, “by placing more emphasis on her performance, her physique just followed.”

Johnson, who is also co-founder of elite New York fitness company Homage, revealed that Scarlett’s gym sessions involved, “movements from plyometrics, yoga, Olympic weight lifting, kettlebells and gymnastics to reach peak levels of performance.”

The Hollywood A-lister spent hours jumping, bear crawling and medicine ball throwing her way around the gym, with her favourite moves to work up a sweat and get in shape including deadlifts, pull-ups, military presses, pistol squats and kettlebell swings according to Eric.

“We worked to not only challenge her body to adapt, but also stimulate her mind,” he said,

To complement the training regime and get Scarlett in shape for the role (the character’s signature costume is also a figure-hugging black leather jumpsuit) the star followed a carefully controlled diet for over a year too.

“She cycled through days of high carbohydrates and low fat consumption, versus low carbohydrates and higher fat while maintaining protein intake,” Eric explained.

There was also a 12 hour ‘fasting window’ incorporated into every day, with Scarlett pushing the time between meals upwards depending on her working days.

“At moments we pushed beyond that to 14-to-15 hours depending on the filming schedule,” Eric added.

Clearly Scarlett has superhuman willpower to compliment her superhero-ready strength and fitness now too!
