Living in the world as an individual with sensitivities is cumbersome enough without throwing travel into the mix. Breaking established routines are practically sacrilegious to these folks, and with good reason – an entire day, week, or month can be thrown off when one strays from healthy rituals. As a frequent traveler, a complaint I often hear is that the struggle to maintain routines is more than real. While it may require a little more work than the typical jetsetter, there are travel hacks that are sure to keep you on track without feeling the pangs. After all, sensitive beauties deserve to see the world, too!

1. Do your destination research in advance.

The very first thing you should do before even looking at a suitcase is understanding where you’re going and what you’re going to be doing there. What sort of climate are you going to be in? Is it going to negatively or positively affect your skin and hair? Are you going to be in environments where you’re likely to have an allergic reaction? Are you going to have access to certain resources like grocery stores, pharmacies, etc., that might have what you need if you accidentally forget something? For some beauties, even the porosity of the water might be something you need to find out. In some instances, you may find that aspects of your trip change based on these kinds of questions.

2. Anticipate that your needs will not be met, and pack accordingly.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s best to be prepared when you have specific needs so that you don’t need to rely on anyone or anything but yourself. There may well be no resources at your destination, and you’re going to have to stock up on every item in your beauty routine. This includes not just skin and hair care items, but basic items like towels and sheets. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and it leads me to my next bit of travel advice…

3. If maintaining your routine means checking a bag…bite the bullet and check a bag.

This one can be hard for frugal beauties, but when it comes to travel – if spending a little more means peace of mind on a vacation, it’s generally worth it. Your health should take priority, and yes, your skin and hair are part of your health. It’s unfortunate, but for some of us, traveling means incorporating an extra bit into your budget to account for items that are necessary for you to feel happy, healthy, and beautiful. Plus, doesn’t it feel better to have all your stuff with you, like a little home away from home?

4. Give your travel companions or hosts a heads up if necessary.

First of all – NEVER apologize for yourself if you have specific needs while traveling. You have to be true to yourself, because if you don’t, no one else will. That being said, sometimes our specific needs do affect others. As a courtesy, it’s kind to anticipate if you need an extra 30 minutes in the bathroom while getting ready or more alone time than the average Jane. As always, with pretty much every human issue on the planet – communication and respect are key!

5. Don’t be afraid to treat yourself a little here and there.

Yes, staying on track is very important – but so is living a little! If there aren’t any disastrous consequences from having that luxurious dessert on the last night of your vacation, why not treat yourself a little? If there aren’t life-threatening illnesses or repercussions, indulge in some moderation and try something that might be out of your comfort zone.
