winterizeyourskinThe winter months are fast approaching, which means egg nog, family, holiday cheer, lots of food and …dry skin? Luckily, the last one doesn’t have to be a a part of your holiday season if you take our advice here at Got Beauty. Seasons change, and your skin care routine should change with them, so before you begin you Sugarhouse Christmas shopping, stop by Got Beauty to make sure your skins is looking fresh for this chilly holiday season ahead (because you know your aunt is going to take like…a thousand pictures of your face)!

In the winter time, its all about moisture and hydration. Since we live in a desert this is even more important! Consider switching up your moisturizer to something a little heavier for the winter months. Consider a moisturizer that has Phospholipids, or Hyaluronic acid in it. These moisture locking ingredients pull moisture to the surface of the skin and keep it there all day. Try Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Acid Serum. You can also apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp to lock in hydration. Dermalogica Clear Start Hydrating LotionMoisturizing, plant-based Squalane softens and nourishes while hyaluronic Acid provides instant relief of skin dehydration.

Also, and this should go without saying but stay hydrated ALWAYS! Even though you won’t be seating as much as the summer time, you need to drink 8-10 8 oz glasses of water a day to ensure your skin looks supple and hydrated.

Invest in a humidifier, we live in a desert, so the dry air can really take a toll on your skin especially when we crank the indoor heat when it’s cold outside. If you sleep with a humidifier the body can take full advantage of this crucial time to heal itself and remedy dry skin. A humidifier will also help your moisturizer or night cream to work to its full potential. When you are using a really great moisturizer, you may not be getting the full effects of it because their isn’t enough moisture in the air, but a humidifier will definitely help.

Sunscreen is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer. Just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean it isn’t out there. Load up on your sunscreen especially if you are going to be skiing or snowboarding this season, the reflection of the snow amps up the harmful rays onto your skin. Try Supergoop’s broad spectrum sunscreen.

Increase your omega 3 intake with fish oil capsules, or if you’re vegan/vegetarian eat lots of avocados, raw nuts, chia or ground flax seeds. Salmon, spinach and kale are also excellent sources of omegas. These healthy fats help to maintain glowy skin and retain moisture.

Treat yourself to a moisturizing mask once a week. We like GLAMGLOW’s Thirsty Mud Treatment. After your mask, you can increase circulation and collagen production on your face by using this Kitsch Jade Roller.

Avoid harsh exfoliators and cleansers. They will make your skin feel smooth at first, but will cause more damage as they pull out necessary moisture when its dry and cold out. Dermalogica Essential Cleanser is a safe bet that wont strip the moisture out of your skin.

One of the most calming things you can do when it’s cold outside is relaxing bath. If you need a night in, try this herbal remedy to get more out of your bath than just stress relief. Boil  one cup of water, chamomile tea leaves, and a cup of rosemary, then toss it in your tub. Redness and dry patches will disappear with this simple concoction, and you won’t be spending a fortune to help your skin!

Stay warm this winter, and keep that skin glowing!
