More than one third of Australians over the age of 18 have high blood pressure, according to Health Direct, with many cases going undiagnosed for some time due to the fact that most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms.
If you do have high blood pressure, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, losing weight and limiting alcohol intake are all recommended.
Nutritionist Joy Bauer claims that regularly eating potatoes could also help to lower your chances of developing hypertension, thanks to the levels of magnesium and potassium found in the humble vegetable.
“Baked white potatoes are rich in both magnesium and potassium, two vital nutrients for heart health,” Joy Bauer explained to the Daily Express.
“When potassium is low, the body retains extra sodium [and too much sodium raises blood pressure].
“On the other hand, when you eat a potassium-rich diet, the body becomes more efficient at getting rid of excess sodium.”
“Like potassium, magnesium is also a key player in promoting healthy blood flow, therefore, maintaining a healthy balance of both minerals can help keep high blood pressure at bay.”
To improve your diet to help prevent hypertension, Health Direct recommends reducing your salt and fat intake as well as eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
“If you can follow a healthy diet, keep to a healthy weight and avoid smoking, you will reduce your chances of having high blood pressure,” the government funded service writes on their website.
