You’d be smart to think you’re saving yourself 139 calories by guzzling a can of Diet Coke that contains absolutely no calories. However, a new study has found fizzy diet drinks are just as bad for your waistline.

Published in Pediatric Obesity, the research found those who drink diet fizzy drinks actually end up consuming 200 calories more per day.

To conduct the study, researchers from George Washington University in Washington DC examined the diets of 7,026 kids and teenagers enrolled in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2016.

The participants reported what they ate and drank over a 24-hour period.

They found those who drank diet drinks consumed extra calories, and were more likely to eat calories from added sugars in food and drinks compared to those who drank water.

The researchers concluded with the following:

Kids who drank diet drinks consumed 196 calories extra per day

Kids who drank full-sugar drinks consumed an extra 312 calories per day

Kids who drank both diet and regular drinks consumed an extra 450 calories per day

The scientist concluded that diet drinks are of no use in trying to lose weight.

“These results challenge the utility of diet or low-calorie sweetened beverages when it comes to cutting calories and weight management,” said Dr. Allison Sylvetsky, who led the study at the George Washington University.

“Our findings suggest that water should be recommended as the best choice for kids and teens.”

As a healthier alternative, Sylvetsky suggests kids, teenagers and adults should opt for sparkling water with a splash of 100 per cent fruit juice.
